PE
Children at Abacus THRIVE because they are athletes, competitors, team players, good sports and role models. They use knowledge and skills in a wide range of activities and understand how to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle. They improve, motivate and develop positive sporting attitudes.

Orienteering on residential
Intent
Our school aims to inspire all children to develop a love of physical activity and sport. We want our learners to know more and do more. Through good physical education, whole school values and a whole child approach, we aim to nurture confident, resilient children who will strive for their personal best. We listen to our children’s wants and needs and provide them with a range of active experiences, clubs and chances to compete. We want to aid our children in obtaining the values and skills to celebrate and respect the success of others as well as modestly celebrating their own successes.
We aim to ensure that our delivery of physical education allows all children to develop a good physical competence and have the skills and mindset to leave primary school with the capabilities to be successful in their sporting challenges and active lifestyles at secondary school and beyond. We strive to educate both our children and families to develop a greater understanding on how to live healthy lifestyles and make healthy choices. We are dedicated to ensuring healthy minds as well as bodies and will continue to support our children’s well-being.
Implementation
PE is taught for 2 hours a week and is a mix of indoor and outdoor sessions. Pupils in Key Stage One are taught by our Active Day Camps club coaches, who also support KS2 teachers with ongoing professional development. As part of our outdoor learning days, children participate in PE lessons on Hampstead Heath every half-term. We are also visited by coaches from Bloomsbury Football club twice a week at lunch times, which help our children to continue learning through play in a structured manner. As part of our enrichment offer, we provide several sports after-school clubs, such as football, basketball, dodgeball and dance.

Assessment
Children are assessed gathered from pupil voice and discussions within sessions. Teachers use this information to support children's learning and adapt where necessary. Teachers then use end-of-unit assessment grids that record children's development of motor competence, rules, strategies and tactics and healthy participation. Staff are supported with their subject knowledge through the use of the Complete PE programme.
